Background Several previous studies examining the effectiveness of an extension-oriented
treatment approach (EOTA) in a more heterogeneous group of subjects10,11,13 have
failed to find significant differences when compared with alternative treatment
procedures. The present study examined a more homogenous sample (those with
symptoms distal to the buttock demonstrating centralization with lumbar extension)
Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an EOTA (extensionoriented treatment approach) in a subgroup of subjects hypothesized to benefit
from the treatment compared with a lumbar spine strengthening exercise program
at both short-term and long-term follow-up.
